As part of the collaboration between Finish and the Future Food Institute, this project aims to rehabilitate water storage and distribution channels starting from the secondary source of “Cannicchio”, a hamlet in the Municipality of Pollica in the province of Salerno, the capital of “Mediterranean Diet”. Small water sources such as this are often difficult to use for agricultural or domestic use because of their displacement from the area of origin, a crucial factor that has made the process of obtaining water extremely complicated over the years.
This initiative will enhance the production of food varieties typical of the Mediterranean diet, promote local biodiversity, and combat hydrogeological instability and soil erosion.
Specifically, the process of restarting will make it possible to restore the distribution lines intended for crops and the inhabitants of the Cannicchio area, thus ensuring a better supply of water resources from the source. Given its complexity and importance, the intervention will be divided into three phases: in the first phase, the water collection point will be restored to prevent infiltration and dispersion into the soil; in the second phase, the plant will be built to store water from the source; in the third and final phase, a hydraulic network will be created to ensure optimal distribution of the water accumulated for both agricultural and domestic use.
All this will make it possible to satisfy the water needs of the hamlet of Cannicchio both for irrigation and cultivation of the fields, which requires 11,000 cubic meters of water each year, and for the town center, which will thus be able to use this resource for drinking use only and avoid its absence in the hottest seasons of the year.
